EDUCATION
Education should be a basic necessity for every child in the world. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all children especially those living in remote and underserved regions in Cameroon. In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goal 4 of the United Nations, our ambition in ISED is to ensure that every school-age child obtains an education. Presently, millions of children across the world and in the (2 English speaking regions of Cameroon) are out of school and lack basic skills in reading and writing. Our educational projects focuses on facilitating access to basic education for poor and vulnerable children with a particular focus on girls education. We work in close collaboration with school directors and teachers in selecting children from improvised families, to give them a chance to an education while following up on their educational progress.
WHY FOCUS ON GIRLS EDUCATION
Even though poverty remains the principal cause for the significant number of uneducated girls in rural Africa and Cameroon in particular, it is also evident that in some communities, there is discrimination against the education of girls. When deciding between educating a boy or girls, there is a preference for boys as girls are kept at home and prepared to endorsed the role of future housewives. Girls participation is further reduced due to early marriages, sexual harassment and unwanted pregnancy. In ISED we believe that educating a girl is ensuring a better and more sustainable livelihood for a family and the community in general. There is an African proverb that says: “If we educate a boy, we educate one person. If we educate a girl, we educate a family – and a whole nation”. By sending a girl to school, there is a bigger chance that she will secure an education for her children.
AGRICULTURE
Agriculture in Africa symbolizes a means for food, livelihood and business opportunities for millions of people especially in rural areas where most of the poorest live. Investing and supporting sustainable agricultural initiatives is a step towards eradicating poverty, while realizing the Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDGs) of eradicating hunger by 2030 and the additional 2 billion people expected to be undernourished by 2050.
In ISED, we are fully dedicated to supporting young and small-scale farmers in rural areas with equipment’s and training needed to successfully carry out their agricultural projects. We work in partnership with local partners and experts in the field to create bigger impacts.
WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
While poverty remains the principal cause of lack of education, it is also evident that in some communities, there is discrimination against the education of girls. Empowering women is a way of promoting a woman’s self -confidence self-worth, giving these women the ability to make the choices that they deem best for them and the possibility to influence social change for themselves and the community at large.
Our ambition in ISED is to support women and young girls to know they are valued. We want to accompany them towards achieving their goals and to ensure that they are not discriminated upon. We want to create more visibility on the importance of girls’ education and on the important role that women play in our regions and in the world in general. To achieve our vision, we support women through vocational training ( like tailoring) so they can be self-reliant. We assist women in their desire to start a small business. We also organise discussion sessions with young women, an opportunity where these girls can voice out their challenges, expectations and hopes. Due to the difficulties that most girls face in purchasing sanitary towels especially in remote areas, we have made the distribution of hygienic towels one of our main activities.
