Initiative for Empowering Educators Academically, Socially and Emotionally

In compliance with the framework of the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Initiative for Social and Economic Development (ISED) is empowering educators in Cameroon  to improve learner’s attainment. Empowered individuals can consider varied perspectives, negotiate with others, amend policies as needed as they can think independently, make their own decisions thoughtfully and with reference to relevant information, and act on that knowledge (Catherine Broom, 2015). ISED’s educational policy is aimed at transforming basic education so that pupils can acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to thrive in their academics, careers, and adult lives. The insufficiency of well trained teachers is a general issue in Africa if not a global plight, with Cameroon not being an exception. Most often than not, pupils of Africa’s numerous primary schools are either faced with the wicked problem of no teachers or at best, at the mercy of teachers with little or no pedagogic skill. In our studies and findings, we realised that other than the challenges mentioned earlier, there are other difficulties that teacher encounter that will handicap their capacity of practicing their profession efficiently. According to our findings, some teachers are void of emotional intelligence. some still implement punitive measure on children which is not a recommended practice. Due to the inconsistencies in payment of salaries that some teachers have to endure for months and even years, their frustrations and anger can be misdirected towards children, making them less efficient in their role as educators. It is imperative to empower educators in view of improving learner’s attainment.

 

 

Through our workshops and seminars we empower educators with the skills to search, assess and use high quality evidence pedagogic instructional materials like Campbell reviews, Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) toolkits, to develop and improve on their pedagogic skills. We are convinced that the 21st century educator needs to be able to:

  1. Search Pedagoigic Evidence
  2. Access Quality of Pedagoigic Evidence
  3. Creatively & Effectively use Evidence to Inform Pedagogic Practice/ Decisions

Our Educator Empowerment Activities include but are not limited to:

  • Stakeholder meetings, focus group discussions and key informant interviews as part of the formative study to inform our interventions
  • Pedagogic training and workshops for knowledge and skill transfer
  • Pedagogic audits and feedback to monitor and evaluate impact of our interventions
  • Coaching and mentoring of teachers in subject matter, classroom management and evaluation techniques

Thanks to our training on Emotional Intelligence, some primary school teachers  from our partner school – Elig Zogo public school Saa, were able to create and improve relationships between themselves and their learners in the classroom. Such training has helped the teachers to improve the effectiveness of their correctional methods and address difficulties faced by pupils with different learning needs.

We are currently working towards a training scheduled in July 2019, in Yaounde Cameroon, to equip educators with meta-cognitive skills of learning and teaching. With this, we hope to empower educators with the skills to guide pupils on identifying their strengths and weaknesses as well as the strategies they use to learn. Meta-cognitive learners are proactive in their efforts to learn because they are aware of their strengths and limitations and because they are guided by personally set goals. Meta-cognitive skills will enhance self-satisfaction and motivation for the pupils of government school Elig-Zogo to continue improving their methods of learning.
